The history of acrobatic swing dance can be traced to early American ballrooms where it was often called jazz swing. Early dances were often similar to modern day glitzy moves such as the hip flip, the moonwalk, and the mini back drop. It was often called simply jazz or jive. This was done by white males who took it upon themselves to teach female performers how to perform these dance routines. In the case of Lindy hop, it was women that taught men how to do the jive and other quick moves that made it very entertaining.

As the years passed, the style became more refined until it reached what we know now as acrobatic swing dance. This helps the dancers focus on their movements without distraction from the larger than life lighting that is placed in most dance studios.

A good way for new dancers to get started with the choreography is to take a dance class and then brush up on the basics once you return home. Learning the basics of classical ballet and the acrobatic versions of both will allow you to have a basis of the choreography you wish to do when you enter your dance studio. This will make it much easier to transition into a more modern dance style.

Unlike the regular swing where the dancer places their feet at different positions, the Lindy Hop moves both feet together in a circular motion. The dancer’s knees are also positioned in the same position, but this time the toes are turned outwards. The goal of the Lindy Hop is to create distance between the dancer’s foot and the ball.
