How to Dance the Esan Style

Ever since they became popular in the 1920s, Esan acrobatic dance has been the favorite sport for many young people in Japan. The main difference between traditional Japanese dance and that of other countries is that the dance is performed on a high pole, or as it is called in Japanese, an “era”. The term is derived from the verb “arai,” which means to soar.

There are three main types of equipment used for this sport. The first is known as the kakasa, which is the basic apparatus used by younger students. In the first step, known as the “taikata,” the dancer must hold both hands at their sides, just as if they were in the “taikomi” position. They then swing their arms from side to side while spinning their body, then bend their knees and back their hips, and then repeat.

In the second step, called the “suzabuton,” the dancer lifts his or her right foot up into the air, then takes one step backward before lowering it back down. This is called “zabutomu” in Japanese. In the third step, called the “mujiganae,” the dancer lifts his or her right foot and raises it above his or her head, then back down, then back up. It is a very simple move, but the dancer must maintain a high pace as he or she moves forward. The last, called the “zetsubai,” is similar to the zabutomu, but the dancer goes up on the ball of his or her foot and drops it as if it has fallen down.

There are several clubs and gyms in Japan that specialize in this type of dance, and many students learn from experienced dancers. Because of its popularity in Japan, the American “Judo” Martial Arts Club in New York City even hosts a dance competition at the Empire Gym on 72nd Street.

Other dance steps for this dance include “soreibu”jikanburo,” which are the two main “taikata” dances. They are performed in the same manner as the traditional taikata, and each involves a single partner. These are performed in a round room or an oval room that has two entrances, each with a stage.

The best way to learn these dances is through the help of a qualified teacher who will show you how to dance the Esan moves. Once you learn the basic dances, you can try them out in a formal club or in a group setting with other participants. You can practice your moves before the performance.
